Mediation continues to make final arrangements for the peace of southern Sudan in Khartoum
Khartoum, 6 August 2018 – Sudan’s Foreign Minister, Direderi Mohamed Ahmed, said discussions to finalize the implementation of the peace process in southern Sudan would continue in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum instead of being transferred to the Kenyan capital Nairobi as planned by IGAD.
The Sudanese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that IGAD leaders had agreed to hold further consultations and meetings to elaborate details and timetables for the implementation of a peace agreement signed by the parties on Sunday in Khartoum.
According to the statement of the Foreign Ministry, the Sudanese mediation will develop the time frame for the Southern Sudan Peace Agreement to form the mechanisms of implementation. The statement pointed to the leaders of the region reached an agreement that the parties to the conflict again to discuss the outstanding issues and included in the signed agreement.
Deirderey, the head of the IGAD countries, called for extending the duration of the negotiations for two weeks until 19 August.
For his part, Kenyan President Uhur Kenata praised the Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir and the mediation team in their efforts to reach a peace agreement between the conflicting parties in southern Sudan.
Kenyatta said Sudan’s hosting of peace talks between the government and opposition groups in recent weeks had found interest and negotiations should continue in Khartoum.
