Amnesty International calls for trial of perpetrators of war crimes in southern Sudan
Amnesty International called on the leaders of southern Sudan to “bring all persons involved in war crimes and human rights violations for immediate trial and not to pardon them,” noting that “amnesty for atrocities is not only contrary to Southern Sudan’s international obligations, Experience has also shown that it will not lead to building lasting peace in the country. “
“Any attempt to provide guarantees to dissidents should make it clear that the amnesty does not cover serious crimes committed by warring parties since the beginning of the war in 2013,” Amnesty International said in a statement. “International law requires the prosecution of those responsible for serious crimes, Against humanity and war crimes, to ensure the rights of victims, effective remedies and to combat impunity. “
“The lack of accountability for these crimes and violations is the main cause of the crisis in southern Sudan at the moment.”
