Southern Sudan Security Service Arrests Senior Youth Leader
Juba, 29 July 2018 – The national security service in Juba arrested the youth leader and political analyst Peter Byar Ajak when he was on his way to the city of Awiel on Saturday morning.
His wife said that Byar was arrested while boarding the plane to the city of Awiel to attend the commemoration of the founding of the Red Army.
His wife revealed that he was being held in the buildings of the National Security Service, capital of Juba, adding that she had not been able to contact him since his arrest.
She said the charges against Byar were unclear. “We, like his family, are concerned … the security authorities have confirmed that they are holding Byar but no one is allowed to see him.” She stressed that Byar should be charged and brought to trial or released.
Authorities in the eastern state of Awiel and Awiel in April refused permission for Peter Byar and his colleagues to hold meetings with local youths in the cities of Awiel and Wangok because of government authorities’ refusal to go to Juba.
