The Popular Movement in the opposition rejects the amnesty announced by Kiir Lamshar
The opposition Popular Movement led by Reak Machar downplayed President Kiir’s decision to pardon Rick Machar.
SPLA deputy spokesman Paul Lam Kabriel said in a statement Thursday that President Kiir had to release all political prisoners and prisoners of war instead of his amnesty.
“Silva must ask for forgiveness from the people of south Sudan because many people were killed in Juba in 2013 and 2016,” he said.
Lam said Kiir Lamashar’s amnesty was ineffective because the parties had signed a peace agreement and the president could not grant Mr. Machar a pardon. “The peace agreement has been signed, so we will go to Juba because of the agreement, not the amnesty decision.”
President Kiir issued a decree on Wednesday exempting opposition leader Riek Machar and other opposition groups days after signing a peace deal in Khartoum.
